If you suffer from acne, you've likely tried a wide variety of products from the store to help get rid of the pimples and redness. But you might be surprised to know that there are plenty of homemade options that can work just as well as anything you buy in a store.
One of the main benefits of trying a homemade remedy is that you know exactly what you're putting on your face and you control in what intensity certain ingredients are used. You can also quickly see which ingredients work for you and which might be too strong for your particular skin and keep changing the treatment until it's just right for your skin type.
Many homemade remedies are quite simple as well as inexpensive. Let's look at a few.
Mint
For centuries, this herb has been used to cure acne. Simply squeeze the juice from mint leaves and apply it to your face before you to go bed. If you have acne all over your face, this could take a bit of work to get enough juice for the entire face. If you have a few scattered pimples, you can simply apply the juice to the pimples themselves.
Cucumber
Women have used cucumber slices on puffy eyes for centuries. We know that cucumber helps to repair aggravated skin, so it stands to reason that it would help with acne as well. Simply make a paste out of cucumber (use the long, English cucumbers that have fewer seeds) and apply that to your skin. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wash off. Cucumber won't try your skin out the way other treatments might, but it has been shown to reduce the severity of acne and prevent further acne from forming.
Lime juice wash
Cleanse your skin with a mixture of lime juice mixed with boiled milk. Let the milk cool, add about 1 part lime juice to 3 or 4 parts milk and wash your face with this.
Vinegar and honey
Not together, but separately, these two food products are effective for the treatment of acne. Vinegar is usually applied to the pimpled areas only (not the entire face) and left on for about 10 minutes before being washed off. If your skin is very sensitive, dilute the vinegar a bit, but not too much. Honey can be applied as a mask and left on for up to 20 minutes before being washed off. Honey helps to draw some of the toxins out of the body.
Egg white
Separate a few eggs and apply just the whites to your face. Leave on until dry (about 15-25 minutes) and then wash off. Your skin will feel tight and much less oily when you're done.
